A new district is taking shape in the heart of the port
Kleiner Grasbrook — today still largely port area — is set to become one of Hamburg’s newest districts in the coming years. Situated in the middle of the port, opposite the Speicherstadt and adjacent to HafenCity, a quarter is taking shape here that combines living, working and culture by the water.
What is planned
The City of Hamburg is developing the area as one of its most important inner-city expansion projects of the coming decades. Plans include:
- Thousands of new homes for a diverse mix of households
- Spaces for work, education and culture
- Riverside promenades and public open spaces overlooking the Elbe
- A connection to public transport, including a planned underground line
Why the location is special
Grasbrook has a central location directly on the waterfront. The new district is being developed on the southern bank of the Norderelbe, opposite the city centre and next to HafenCity.
