Air monitoring station on Kleiner Grasbrook closes: Replacement not expected soon

The marker shows the former 82HF monitoring site at Worthdamm 49. Its position comes from the Hamburg Air Monitoring Network’s published coordinates and the verified Nachtatlas V0.5 basemap. The dashed line is the district boundary, not a planning boundary.
The Hafen / Kleiner Grasbrook (82HF) air monitoring station has closed. The Hamburg Air Monitoring Network identifies 21 September 2026 as the final day of measurements. The site at Worthdamm therefore no longer supplies new local readings. A new station is being planned in HafenCity, but it is not expected to begin operating before the end of 2027. Where air pollution was measured
The station stood on a grass verge at Worthdamm 49 in the Kleiner Grasbrook district. Measurements began on 29 September 2015, and the site was classified as an urban background monitoring station. Pollutants monitored included nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and particulate matter in the PM10 and PM2.5 size classes. PM2.5 measurements at the site started in August 2024. 82HF station record
Historical records remain useful for understanding air pollution in the port area. The closure itself does not demonstrate that air quality has improved or deteriorated. In particular, a reading from another neighbourhood cannot automatically stand in for measurements at the former Worthdamm site.
What happens to the instruments
According to the Hamburg Air Monitoring Network, equipment for PM10, PM2.5 and SO₂ is to be used temporarily for indicative measurements at the Neugraben station. The authority states that particulate-matter measurements there began in the second half of September 2026. SO₂ measurements were scheduled to start in October 2026; the source checked does not yet confirm that this has happened. Source: changes to the network in 2026
The neighbouring port area still has other stations, including Veddel (20VE) at Zollhafen. But this is a different monitoring location, subject to its own conditions, and not a direct continuation of the Worthdamm data series. Veddel station record
What remains uncertain
The planned new station in HafenCity is intended to monitor the air pollution experienced by residents living close to the port. The authority does not anticipate commissioning it before the end of 2027. The information reviewed gives neither a precise location nor a confirmed opening date. It also does not explain the reason for closing the Worthdamm station. Source: changes to the network in 2026
The closure comes as major changes are planned for Grasbrook. This makes it particularly important to distinguish measurements, proposals and actual pollution levels: the planned development of the district is not itself evidence of future air quality, and the ending of one monitoring series cannot establish it either.
Sources checked on 9 October 2026. The central station register gives 21 September 2026 as the end date. Some older station detail pages still showed no closing date when checked, so not all pages had been updated consistently.
